Ayumi chooses to be honest with her feelings, deciding to "keep chasing" her first love even though Mamoru is largely oblivious to her affection and harbors his own crush on their neighbor, Misaki Yamamoto. The Ending in Manga and Anime
The pivotal moment for Ayumi comes not during a grand romantic gesture, but during a moment of vulnerability. Throughout the series, Kusuda struggles to shed his "bad boy" persona. He wants to tell Ayumi how he feels, but he is trapped by the image he has created for himself.
Ayumi doesn’t recognize him in the cap and goggles, nor in the context of the pool. For a brief, mortifying period, she genuinely believes she has fallen in love with a stranger. When she finally discovers the truth (and the subsequent horror and hilarity that ensues), her world collapses. She is devastated not because she lost a lover, but because she realizes how foolish she has been.
In one of the most poignant scenes in the manga (episode 8 of the anime), Kei watches Ayumi from a distance as she interacts with her friends. He sees her genuine warmth, her silly competitiveness, and her fierce loyalty. And in that moment, he realizes: his “love” for Yuuko was a distant, idealized admiration, but his feelings for Ayumi are the real thing.
In the ending of Hatsukoi Limited Ayumi Arihara remains caught in a love triangle and does not make a final, definitive choice between the two Zaitsu brothers.
