What follows is a masterclass in psychological manipulation. Binodini befriends the naive Asha, becoming her confidante and advisor. Through Asha, Binodini begins to control Mahendra’s emotions. Mahendra, bored with the domesticity of his marriage and enamored by Binodini’s sophistication, falls into an emotional affair.
To understand the magnitude of Chokher Bali , one must understand the literary climate of Bengal in the late 19th century. Bengali novels of that era were often influenced by Western romanticism or traditional Vaishnavism, portraying women as either divine mothers or chaste, submissive wives.
Tagore argues that the problem is not Binodini—the problem is the eye that is too sensitive, the society that cannot handle a woman with agency. By the end of the novel, everyone’s vision is permanently altered, and none of them can return to the blissful blindness they once enjoyed.
The novel found a new life in the 21st century, ironically, through visual media. In 2003, celebrated director released a film adaptation titled Chokher Bali... A Passion Play . Starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Binodini, the film brought Tagore’s work to an international audience.
