Microsoft made a radical, security-driven decision: they removed the DirectSound and DirectSound3D HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer). In Windows XP, the EAX Console could talk directly to the DSP on your Sound Blaster card. In Vista and later, all audio had to go through a software mixer.
