The Villa Arpel is the film’s central antagonist, a character in its own right. It is a monument to 1950s modernism, a house of glass, steel, and concrete that prioritizes aesthetics over comfort. In standard definition, the Villa looks like a nice, modern house. In the Criterion 1080p remaster, the hostility of the architecture becomes palpable. The high resolution captures the clinical sheen of the floors, the sharp edges of the furniture, and the transparent isolation of the glass walls.
