As the political winds turn again, as bills targeting trans youth multiply, the rest of the LGBTQ alphabet would do well to remember its own history. The T is not a letter at the end of the acronym. It is the fire that kept the whole thing warm.

In the modern era, the "shot glass heard around the world" at the 1969 was thrown by Black trans woman Marsha P. Johnson . Alongside fellow activist Sylvia Rivera, Johnson founded STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries) , the first shelter of its kind for LGBTQ+ youth. Earlier uprisings, such as the 1959 Cooper Do-nuts Riot in Los Angeles and the 1966 Compton’s Cafeteria Riot in San Francisco, were also led by trans women and drag queens who refused to accept police harassment.
