Psyren takes about 20 chapters to find its footing. The early chapters feel like a standard death-game thriller (very Gantz meets Jigoku Shoujo ), which was a crowded genre at the time. An anime studio looking for an immediate hit might have been scared off by the slow transition from "horror mystery" to "battle shonen."
