Old Motorola radios require a RIB between the computer and the radio. The GM160 is actually one of the first “RIB-less” designs. Most aftermarket cables have built-in voltage conversion. If you are using an , you absolutely need a Motorola RIB (part # RKN4105). If you are using a modern USB cable labeled “RIB-less” for the GM series, you do not.
On the back of the GM160, you will find a proprietary Motorola accessory connector (usually a 16-pin or 20-pin block depending on the exact chassis revision). You need a cable that mates with this specific connector. The microphone plug is for audio only; programming is done via the rear accessory port.
If you need the exact version number for compatibility: Last CPS version supporting GM160 is (Windows 7/10 32-bit works best; 64-bit may need driver fixes).
Do not attempt to use newer CPS versions designed for the GM340, GM360, or GM380. While similar, they will likely corrupt the GM160’s codeplug.
