The loss forced her to mature rapidly. She has often stated that her drive to complete her Ph.D. and return to India to contribute to policy was, in part, a way to honor his memory. She dedicated her first major research paper on "Female Labor Force Participation in India" to him, acknowledging his unwavering belief in women’s education and financial independence.

In a rare 2018 interview with a financial daily, when asked about her biggest inspiration, Shamika Ravi indirectly credited her father’s scientific temperament:

Both Shamika Ravi and her father hail from . R. N. Ravi is married to Lakshmi Ravi , and together they have three children: Rahul Ravi , Shefali Ravi , and Shamika Ravi .

“My father never gave me answers,” Shamika once remarked in a rare personal aside. “He gave me questions—and a compass to find my own.”

Shamika Ravi’s father is (widely known as R. N. Ravi ), a prominent Indian politician and former bureaucrat who currently serves as the Governor of West Bengal (since 2026).
