In ballroom culture—immortalized by the documentary Paris is Burning —trans women and gay men of color developed voguing, walking categories like "Realness," and a kinship system (houses) that provided family to those rejected by their biological kin.

Conversely, the broader LGBTQ culture is currently experiencing a crisis of prioritization. In many mainstream gay organizations, funding and attention have historically flowed toward HIV/AIDS research, gay marriage, and adoption rights. Today, trans people—especially Black and Indigenous trans women—face epidemic rates of violence, homelessness, and suicide. According to the Human Rights Campaign, at least 32 transgender or gender non-conforming people were violently killed in the US in 2023 alone, the majority being Black women.

The LGBTQ community has also made significant contributions to music, film, literature, and visual arts, with many LGBTQ artists and creatives using their work to explore themes of identity, love, and social justice. The annual Pride parades and festivals, which take place around the world, are a testament to the community's spirit of solidarity and joy, celebrating the progress made towards equality and the ongoing struggle for human rights.
