The series is set in a version of Hell divided into seven rings, though the action primarily takes place in the Pride Ring. This is the domain of human sinners, overseen by powerful overlords and the hierarchy of Heaven. The central conflict arises from the annual "Extermination." To curb Hell’s overpopulation problem, Angels descend once a year to slaughter sinners with holy weapons that permanently erase their souls.
