The controversy surrounding "Lipstick Under My Burkha" reached its peak when the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) refused to grant the movie a release certificate, citing concerns over its content. The CBFC, India's film censor board, objected to certain scenes and dialogues, which it deemed to be "objectionable" and "offensive." The film's makers were asked to make significant cuts and modifications to the film, which they reluctantly agreed to.
After a protracted and acrimonious battle with the CBFC, the filmmakers took their case to the Film Federation of India, which referred the matter to a tribunal. The tribunal, after reviewing the film, upheld the filmmakers' plea and directed the CBFC to reconsider the film's certification.
