The players begin in the harbor city of Sasserine, a tropical Venice of canals and intrigue. Hired by the mysterious noblewoman Lavinia Vanderboren, the party is drawn into a hunt for a lost family fortune. However, this simple treasure hunt spirals into a globe-trotting war against the Crimson Fleet, a journey through the terrifying Isle of Dread (a callback to the original 1981 module), and finally, a suicidal invasion of the Abyss itself to stop the demon lord Demogorgon, the Prince of Demons.
