To appreciate the efficacy of Nalco 8457, one must first understand the enemy. Untreated boiler feedwater contains impurities—calcium, magnesium, silica, and oxygen—that can wreak havoc under the intense heat and pressure of a boiler system.

Steam leaves the boiler pure, but as it travels through pipes and gives up its heat, it condenses back into water. This condensate is prone to picking up carbon dioxide, which forms carbonic acid. This acid eats through condensate return lines. Nalco 8457 includes a neutralizing amine that volatilizes (travels with the steam) and neutralizes this acid, raising the pH of the condensate to protect the return piping infrastructure.
