Shortly after the original Shantae was developed for the Game Boy Color, WayForward’s Matt Bozon and his team began dreaming bigger. In the early 2000s, there were internal pitches and conceptual experiments for a 3D Shantae title that would have fit right in on platforms like the Nintendo 64 or PlayStation.
For a studio like WayForward, which prided itself on detailed, colorful 2D artwork, the N64 presented a massive hurdle. Porting a game designed for the PlayStation (which used CDs and had more storage space for high-quality assets) to the N64 (which used cartridges) required massive compression and optimization. shantae 64
