Singh Chamkila: Amar

Born as Dhanni Ram on July 21, 1960, in the village of Dugri near Ludhiana, Chamkila came from a marginalized Dalit background. Poverty was his first teacher. He dropped out of school after fifth grade and began working in a cloth mill. But despite the grime of the factory floor, Dhanni Ram harbored a burning passion for music and poetry.

This was Chamkila’s dangerous magic. He was a folk poet who held a mirror to a Punjab that was already fracturing—from feudal violence, from the rise of drugs, and soon, from insurgency. Chamkila's big break came in 1982 when he released his debut album, " Tera Mila Intezaar Nahi " (Waiting for Your Love). He went on to release several more albums, including " Dholna" (The Drumbeat) and " Chamkila Di Awaz" (The Voice of Chamkila).

In 2024, director Imtiaz Ali released a biopic titled Amar Singh Chamkila , starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra. The film reignited global interest in his life, introducing his music to a generation raised on Spotify rather than cassette players. The soundtrack, which recreated his classic hits, topped the charts, proving that Chamkila’s voice is timeless.

One of his most iconic songs, " Dholna," released in 1986, remains a classic to this day. The song's catchy melody, coupled with Chamkila's distinctive vocals, made it an instant hit. The song has been covered and remixed numerous times, but the original remains unbeatable.
