Returning to Forks, Bella’s pregnancy deteriorates rapidly. The hybrid baby drains her from within: she suffers from severe weight loss, internal bleeding, and a craving for blood (which Carlisle supplies from the hospital). The wolves, led by a furious Sam Uley, deem the unborn child an “immortal child”—an abomination—and decide to kill Bella and the baby. Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), still in love with Bella, breaks away from the pack to defend her, forming his own pack of loyal wolves.
