For the uninitiated, Thomas Kailath is an information theory and systems engineering legend. A recipient of the IEEE Medal of Honor, his work on the Viterbi algorithm, linear prediction, and fast algorithms for matrix factorization is monumental. His book, Linear Systems (Prentice-Hall, 1980), is essentially his masterclass on the geometric and algebraic approach to system theory.
