On your wiring diagram, trace the heavy gauge red wire from the alternator’s "BAT" terminal. This is the main output. It travels to the ammeter shunt and then to the battery terminal on the starter solenoid. If this wire is corroded or broken, the batteries will never charge. The "R" terminal on the alternator (sometimes marked with a number like 1 or 2 depending on the retrofit) is the sensing terminal. The wiring diagram will show this wire running to the ignition switch or a junction block.
