The film climaxes during a war, but the conflict is not the point. The point is the farewell. Maquia rushes to find an elderly, dying Ariel. She—still a teenage girl in appearance—holds her ancient son in her arms as he passes away.

We watch Ariel grow from a crying infant into a rambunctious toddler, a rebellious teenager, and eventually a mature adult with his own family. Meanwhile, Maquia never changes. She looks like his sister, then his younger sister, and eventually his daughter. This creates excruciating social friction.
