Closing out this first block is "Scarecrow"—a masterpiece of rural horror. The brothers have a massive fight. Sam wants to find Dad (tracking a clue in Indiana); Dean wants to follow Dad’s orders (go to California). They split up for the first time.
“You’ve gotten big, Sammy.”
: Sam begins having premonitions, leading them back to their childhood home in Lawrence, Kansas . They battle a powerful poltergeist and receive help from a psychic, Missouri Moseley.
While the monster is forgettable, the episode subtly introduces the theme of a "higher plan." Sam questions whether God or fate is guiding the hook man. It is also the first time the brothers realize the "kill list" is moving up the social ladder. The effects of the hook flying through the air and impaling a sorority girl are surprisingly visceral for network TV at 9 PM.
When they reunited, bleeding and bruised, Dean slammed Sam against the Impala. “Don’t you ever walk away again.”
