In modern networking, non-cryptographic images are obsolete. The k9 in ensures SSH is available. If you run a non-k9 image, you are forced to use Telnet (plain text passwords). After upgrading to this image, enforce SSH:

If you flash the switch with only the .bin file (often done via TFTP using the copy tftp flash command), you will update the operating system, but you will likely delete the HTML and GUI files stored in the flash memory.
