Between May and July 2023, two videos, in particular, shocked the Indian conscience. One video showed a horrifying instance of sexual assault and parading of two Kuki-Zo women by a mob of Meitei men. Another showed the murder of 11 Meitei civilians, including women and children, allegedly by Kuki militants. These videos were originally shared on WhatsApp and Telegram before spreading to Twitter.
The Indian government and various legal authorities, including the , have issued strict directives to social media platforms (such as X/Twitter) to remove this content.
