This is a fallacy. Studies show that while people think they know how to help, they often don't. Survivor stories teach the tactics of intervention.

When we are presented with statistics, our brain activates the analytical processing centers. We may understand the data, but we do not necessarily feel it. However, when we hear a story, our brain engages differently. Neuroscientists call this "neural coupling." As we listen to a story, our brain waves begin to synchronize with the storyteller’s. We simulate the emotions, the fear, and the relief of the survivor. This is a fallacy
