The man behind the stage name was Liverpool-born singer-songwriter Colin Vearncombe . He wrote "Wonderful Life" in 1985 during what he described as a "downward spiral". Within a short period, Vearncombe had been dropped by his record label, was involved in multiple car crashes, dealt with his mother's serious illness, and faced the collapse of his first marriage.
