Throughout the runtime, the dwarfs (especially Merlin) only show affection to Snow White when she is in her "Red Shoes" form. But the film punishes this behavior. Merlin is the "ugly" dwarf, and he spends the movie lying about his identity. The climax does not celebrate the slim version of Snow White. Instead, she realizes that the shoes are a lie. She deliberately removes them, returning to her original, larger body, and declares that she will not change her appearance for anyone.
