If you watch a pro do a Z Scratch, their fader hand looks like it is writing a tiny "Z" in the air: Down, Right, Up. Their record hand goes: Forward, Pause, Backward.

Place the record at 12 o'clock. The sample you are scratching (a fresh drum break or a vocal "Ahh" works best) should be peaking. z scratch
