When a cat is tachycardic from fear or a dog is hypertensive from anxiety, the physiological data becomes contaminated. A mildly elevated white blood cell count might be infection—or simply the result of stress-induced demargination. A growling dog is not "dominant"; it is a patient whose communication has been ignored.

When an animal experiences chronic stress, whether from separation anxiety, environmental poverty, or social conflict, the body initiates a physiological cascade. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is activated, releasing cortisol and catecholamines.
