The film picks up after Tang Sanzang (Wen Zhang in the first film, replaced by Kris Wu here) has subdued Sun Wukong. The quartet—Sanzang, Wukong, Pigsy, and Sandy—is traveling west. However, trust is non-existent. Wukong, still bitter about the headband, views his master as a weak fraud. Sanzang, in turn, views Wukong as a ticking time bomb.
Without spoiling the third act, there is a scene involving the demoness and the monk that is deeply uncomfortable. It plays with the themes of sacrifice vs. suicide.
