The premise was simple yet urgent: a rogue planet, Mongo, is on a collision course with Earth. Flash, a handsome Yale graduate and polo player, boards a plane that is struck by a meteorite. He crash-lands alongside the beautiful Dale Arden and the eccentric scientist Dr. Hans Zarkov. The trio is kidnapped by Zarkov, who launches them in a rocket toward Mongo to investigate the threat.

The serials are also responsible for perhaps the most famous quote associated with the franchise. At the end of the first cliffhanger, Flash is trapped in a deadly "booby trap" chamber. Dale screams, "Flash! Flash! I can’t find him!" A random extra responds with the immortal line: flash.gordon
