Gen 6 is divisive. The jump to 3D on the Nintendo 3DS was breathtaking, but fans criticized X & Y for being too easy. However, Mega Evolution remains the most beloved "battle gimmick" ever created.

And that is far more interesting.

Gen 7 coincided with Pokémon GO's global launch, bringing in a new wave of fans. The removal of gyms was scary, but the Trials (fighting Totem Pokémon with allies) were a fresh challenge. Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon are the definitive versions with a much harder Necrozma boss fight.

From the pixelated sprites of Kanto to the glitchy but gorgeous open world of Paldea, represent more than just software updates. They are cultural bookmarks. Ask any fan what their first generation was, and they will tell you a story about where they were, who they traded with, and which starter they chose.
