Born in 1940 in Hartford, Connecticut, Ronald "Ron" Roy did not initially set out to become a famous children's author. In fact, his path to writing was wonderfully circuitous. He grew up in a large family in East Hartford, graduating from the University of Connecticut with a degree in history. For many years, Roy worked as a fourth-grade teacher—a detail that becomes obvious when you read his books, as the vocabulary, sentence structure, and mystery complexity are perfectly calibrated for that specific age group.
