The most iconic example is the Stonewall Uprising of 1969. While history remembers the riots as a flashpoint for gay liberation, the instigators and fiercest fighters were transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals. Figures like (a self-identified transvestite and gay liberation activist) and Sylvia Rivera (a founding member of the Gay Liberation Front and the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries, or STAR) were instrumental. STAR was the first LGBTQ+ youth shelter in North America, explicitly created to house homeless transgender youth.
