The story is set in a near-future war-torn European city (filmed in Bucharest, Romania). A brilliant DARPA scientist, Dr. Mark Clyne (played by James Badge Dale), is deployed to investigate a disturbing anomaly. US Special Forces soldiers are dying under mysterious circumstances. The locals call them ghosts; the military calls them "phantoms." Clyne, the inventor of the advanced hyperspectral imaging goggles used by the troops, discovers that these entities are invisible to the naked eye but can be seen through his technology.
