It is sometimes better to take a penalty (-5) than to cross a number that ruins your future potential. For example, in the Red row, you have crossed 2,3,4,5. You have not crossed 6. If the white sum is 12, you could cross it, but that would lock you out of 6,7,8,9,10,11 forever. Take the penalty and wait for a 6.
