Spirited Away was born from personal turmoil. In the late 1990s, Miyazaki was considering retirement. His friend and mentor, Yoshifumi Kondō (director of Whisper of the Heart ), died suddenly at 47. Miyazaki returned to work to create a film for the 10-year-old daughter of a colleague—and for all children facing an uncertain future.
The rest of the film follows her labor: scrubbing floors, helping a stink spirit, facing No-Face’s greed, and journeying to the surreal swamp to save Haku. In the end, she remembers Haku’s real name (the spirit of a river), frees her parents, and returns to the human world—changed, but leaving the audience haunted by what she has seen.
