The plot was simple yet effective. The evil wizard Gargamel (played with scene-chewing relish by Hank Azaria) chases the Smurfs through a magical portal, landing them in Central Park. Stranded in a world vastly bigger and louder than their own, the Smurfs must navigate the complexities of human life while befriending a marketing executive named Patrick Winslow (Neil Patrick Harris) and his pregnant wife, Grace (Jayma Mays).
