Ageism in Hollywood is a hydra; cut off one head (the lack of roles) and two more appear (unequal pay, makeup departments that still try to "de-age" women in post-production). But the conversation has changed. It is no longer "Why should we tell her story?" but "Why haven't we been telling it all along?"

The US is not the only player. International cinema has long revered its older women. In France, Isabelle Huppert (70) continues to play leads in erotic thrillers ( Elle , The Piano Teacher repertory). In Spain, Penélope Cruz (49, entering the prime) fights for roles that defy the "aging beauty" stereotype. In Korea, Yoon Yeo-jeong (76) won an Oscar for Minari , proving that grandmothers can be the heart of an American indie.
