Figures such as Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera were central to the Stonewall Inn uprising. Following the riots, they co-founded Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) , the first shelter in the U.S. dedicated to homeless LGBTQ youth.
