A flawed, messy, but wildly compelling masterpiece of obsessive love. It’s not a typical Bollywood romance; it’s a political, tragic, and deeply uncomfortable character study.

represents the new India. She is educated, ambitious, and politically aware. While she enjoys the attention Kundan gives her during their youth, her dreams extend far beyond the gallis of Benaras. She moves to Delhi for university, and in the intellectual vibrancy of JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University), she transforms. She falls in love with Akram (Abhay Deol), a student leader who represents the ideals of equality, secularism, and progress.

The answer was a resounding yes .

Kundan (Dhanush) is a street-smart, lower-caste Hindu boy from Varanasi who falls obsessively in love with Zoya (Sonam Kapoor), a privileged, educated Muslim girl. He spends his childhood chasing her, only for her to leave for college in Delhi. When she returns, she is in love with a wealthy Muslim political activist, Akram. What follows is a story of unrequited love, political betrayal, and self-destruction spanning a decade.

Years later, Kundan is a small-time tourist guide, still wearing the same red scarf, still in love with the same girl. When he tracks Zoya down in Delhi, she is engaged to Jasjeet (Abhay Deol), a student activist. The second half spirals into chaos as Kundan tries to win her back, only to realize that Zoya is using him for a political agenda.

The film traditionally ends with the tragic death of the protagonist, Kundan (played by Dhanush), in an explosion, as he accepts his fate to prove his love for Zoya (Sonam Kapoor).
