The most ironic legacy of is that its failure directly led to one of the best DC films ever made: James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad (2021). Gunn’s film ignores the 2016 movie except for a joke about the first mission being a disaster. It kills off nearly the entire original cast in the first five minutes (minus Harley, Boomerang, and Flag), resetting the tone to R-rated, bloody, hilarious perfection. It is, in many ways, a direct rebuke to the 2016 version.

But if you want to watch a group of incredibly talented actors having the time of their lives—Viola Davis intimidating gods, Will Smith shooting bad guys while smiling, and Margot Robbie inventing a character for a generation—it is a bizarre, enjoyable mess.
