Director Tsuboi Toshio employs a distinct visual language in this premiere:

July 19, 2019 (Japan, TBS)

In a scene that induces visceral cringe, Nagi overhears her “work friends” mocking her in a group chat. The ringleader, Kasuga, texts: “She’s just a glorified errand girl. Great for taking the blame, though. But I have zero respect for her. Never get a boyfriend like that doormat.”

Nagi’s new home is not glamorous. She rents a room in a coin-laundry apartment building, her only neighbor an elderly woman who collects coins from the washing machine filters. The room has no air conditioning, a broken window, and a vine growing through the wall.

The Japanese title "Oitoma" (暇) means “free time” or “idle time.” But this is not a vacation to Bali. Nagi’s “vacation” is unpaid, unwanted by society, and terrifying. Yet, as Episode 1 closes, she hangs her laundry on a rooftop clothesline, and for the first time, she smiles without performing. Her vacation is from other people’s expectations .

If you have ever felt exhausted by social obligation, if you have ever deleted an app to feel peace, or if you have ever looked in the mirror and not recognized the person trying to please everyone — this episode will speak to you.
