This naming scheme is standardized by MAME developers. When a new version of MAME is released, the "index" of supported games is updated. This is why ROM management is critical: a ROM set that works with MAME version 0.100 might not work with version 0.250, as filenames and internal structures may have been renamed or reorganized to better reflect the original hardware.
