Manchester United was founded in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR Football Club by a group of railway workers in Newton Heath, Manchester. The club played friendly matches and participated in local tournaments until 1885, when it turned professional and joined the Football League. In 1902, the club changed its name to Manchester United and moved to its current home, Old Trafford.
