From the underground ballroom scene—a vital space for transgender and queer youth of color—to mainstream media, trans-led creativity has driven innovation in fashion, dance, and storytelling.

For decades, the rainbow flag has flown as a symbol of unity, representing a broad coalition of identities united in the fight for liberation. Yet, within that vibrant spectrum, the "T" has often had a complex and evolving relationship with the rest of the LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, and others) movement. To understand the transgender community’s place within LGBTQ+ culture is to explore a story of mutual aid, generational tension, and a shared, though not identical, struggle against oppression.

In 1966, three years before Stonewall, a riot broke out at in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district. When police harassed drag queens and trans women, they fought back, hurling dishes and coffee cups. This event, largely erased from mainstream history until recently, was the first known instance of organized transgender resistance in U.S. history.

In the current political climate (2024-2025), the transgender community has become the primary target of legislative attacks—from bathroom bans to healthcare restrictions for youth. This has inadvertently solidified the bond between trans and non-trans LGBTQ people.

If you ask the average person about the birth of the modern gay rights movement, they will likely cite the Stonewall Riots of 1969 in New York City. While that is accurate, the narrative has often been sanitized to focus on gay white men. In reality, the frontline of Stonewall—and the riots that preceded it—was occupied by transgender women and drag queens.

LGBTQ culture, which has historically been criticized for being white-centric, is undergoing a reckoning. The "T" in the acronym is forcing the movement to adopt —the understanding that a trans woman of color faces a triple burden: transphobia, racism, and sexism.
