Perhaps the most surprising aspect of scorpion behavior is motherhood. Unlike most arachnids, female scorpions do not abandon their eggs. After a gestation period lasting several months to over a year (depending on species), she gives live birth to dozens of soft, white offspring called “scorplings.”
When prey is scarce, they enter a state of torpor—not quite hibernation, but a deep energy-conserving stasis. A scorpion in this state can live for 12 months without food or water.
