Before they were the Addams Family, they were simply a group of macabre figures inhabiting a dilapidated mansion in Charles Addams' single-panel cartoons. They had no names and no consistent relationships. It wasn't until the 1964 live-action television series, produced by Nat Perrin, that the characters were given the identities we know today: Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Lurch, Wednesday, Pugsley, and Grandmama.

The cartoon was cancelled after one full season (the second season was just a repackaging of the first). For years, it languished in “VHS purgatory,” only available through grainy recorded tapes. It wasn't until streaming services like Amazon Prime and Tubi picked up the rights in the 2020s that a new generation discovered it.

Visually, the series is a fascinating time capsule. It uses the classic limited animation technique Hanna-Barbera perfected in the 70s and 80s. Characters are well-designed, leaning closer to Charles Addams’ original sketches than the 1991 film—spindly limbs, long shadows, and pale skin.

For purists, it is important to distinguish this series from the cinematic masterpiece that preceded it.
