Built in collaboration with Germany’s Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) at Kiel, the was commissioned on December 14, 1983. At the time of its launch, it was among the most sophisticated vessels of its kind in the Global South, designed specifically to operate in the harsh monsoon conditions of the tropical Indian Ocean.

Despite its glory, the vessel faces challenges. Being an older design, fuel efficiency is relatively low compared to newer research ships. Furthermore, crew management is difficult; veteran sailors who understand the unique quirks of the ship are retiring, requiring a new generation of specialized marine engineers.
